Lectures:
A Personal Look at Foot Balance.
Foot balance is a general term for how we assess the shape of the hoof capsule, then trim and shoe it according to our assessment. Although there is some science, most ‘foot balancing’ is a decision of the farrier based on their personal preferences. We are influenced by our training and our peers as to what qualifies as a well balance foot and so it is mainly a personal view.
This presentation will consider foot balance in depth, beginning with assessment of both dorsopalmar and mediolateral imbalances. It will consider balance in relation to the leg and the opposing foot, and the division of static and dynamic assessment.
When: Friday 9am
Where: Stora ridhuset/Main arena
Club Foot, Young and Old: including a new look at angles of the foot.
Leading directly on from the presentation, “A Personal Look at Foot Balance”, this presentation looks more closely at club foot. It begins by defining it and how this debilitating hoof distortion develops from a flexural deformity occurring during development and how we can prevent and treat it. In addition to discussing the club foot in depth, dorsopalmar hoof angles are examined, comparing breeds and countries in northern Europe.

Henrik Jansson
2004 gick Henrik klart hovslagarskolan.

Grant D Moon AWCF
Trained in Wales serving a four year apprenticeship with Welsh team farrier Steve Langford AFCL. Having lived in the USA for many years shoeing English and western sport horses. Now shoeing locally at a vet clinic shoeing lame and underperforming sport horses. Many years as a successful farrier competitor winning the world championship in Calgary the International at Stoneleigh whilst competing for Wales and the USA, competed and won many regional contests. Highlight has been the 35 years being a farrier ambassador and clinician for Mustad. This has allowed me to continue my learning as I traveled to over 40 countries. in these travels I have become very aware how environment sport and horse type can impact the feet so making it necessary to become very adaptable. But the use of good products is what farriers want around the world .
Never a master just a lifelong student.

Lectures
Effect of competition shoeing on movement biomechanics in Icelandic horses
The presentation explores how competition shoeing influences the gait mechanics in Icelandic horses. Using advanced kinetic and kinematic analysis, the study findings reveal how hoof conformation and added distal limb mass affect stride frequency and the rhythm of the tölt, limb movement and loading. The findings highlight a trade-off between enhanced gait expression and increased biomechanical stress. Implications for performance, hoof health, and long-term soundness of the locomotor apparatus will be discussed.
When: Friday 11am
Where: Stora ridhuset/Main arena
Effect of competition shoeing on hoof health in Icelandic horses
The presentation explores the impact of hoof dimensions and shoeing practices on the hoof health in Icelandic horses, based on a comprehensive study of 134 horses across international events. The study reveals strong associations between long dorsal hoof walls and common hoof pathologies such as flares, cracks, and hoof capsule imbalances. The findings challenge current sport regulations and highlight the need for evidence-based guidelines.

Evidence-based shoeing in healthy feet: Biomechanical considerations
The lecture explores how trimming and shoeing influence equine limb biomechanics during the swing and stance phases of movement and how these impact on equine performance and hoof health. Drawing on scientific data, it highlights the effects of hoof conformation, shoe design, and surface conditions on impact forces, balance and load distribution within the hoof, limb and breakover movement. Attendees will gain practical insights into optimizing hoof care for soundness and efficient movements.
